ARTISTIC BIOGRAPHY
Hi there! My name is Monica Isabel Vega and I’m a self-taught artist who started painting after teaching English for many years in my native Chile. My love for art started as a girl, when I represented Chile in a UNESCO art contest about life in the year 2000, and was recruited at school to make chalk drawings for the school bulletin blackboard. I decided to study English as a profession and got a degree as a translator in Santiago. After teaching English for about fifteen years, I turned to my childhood passion: drawing and painting. I started with drawing and then oil painting on my own, consulting books about famous artists, and then took a short workshop on oil painting offered at the University of La Serena, after which I took part in the exposition.
TECHNIQUES, STYLE and VISION
I focus on realistic landscapes, still lifes and portraits in oil, charcoal, pencil or pastels. Rendering people, places and events close to me gives me the means to share my vision of the world. I see art as a type of emotive communication and communion between the artist and those that experience the work and interpret it for themselves, thus partaking in it and making it their own.
In my portraits I try to expose the soul of each subject: the character, thoughts and feelings that make them unique in the world. My landscapes are those of my native Elqui Valley, the same as that of Nobel-prize-winning Gabriela Mistral as well as many other poets and artists, and in my still lifes I try to communicate vitality with colour.
Welcome to my page and I hope you enjoy it!
