About Dominic White
Dominic grew up in a coastal fishing village in Massachusetts, where he developed an affinity for the quaint trappings of coastal life.
His love of painting derives from his fascination with the process of replicating three-dimensional objects and scenes onto a two dimensional plane. It's for this reason that he prefers drawing and painting from life rather than having the camera do this transformation for him. It’s more than just taking a picture of something; its about capturing the essence of a thing - the movement, depth, form, and shadow that replicates the feel of a particular person, place, or moment in time.
His artistic pursuits led Dominic to study illustration at the University of Hartford. He later moved to Portland, Maine in 2001, where he became enamored of the city’s Victorian architecture, working waterfront, and coastal scenery.
Dominic doesn’t consider himself a naturally talented artist. Rather, he constantly works to improve his skills, applying himself to a wide range of subjects and mediums. When he’s drawing or painting, Dominic doesn’t use a particular method or formula. In his collections, you’ll find everything from stunning, highly realistic lighthouses to whimsical cloudscapes, Dungeons and Dragons characters, and dancing grapes. His influences include Delacroix, NC and Andrew Wyeth, Gericault, Rubens, Sargent, Anders Zorn, and Gustave Courbet.
